Getting Started
This guide covers the first working session in Roof Layout Studio: start a project from a PDF or image, prepare the source, set the scale, trace the roof geometry, and generate the report.
Before you begin
To work efficiently, prepare:
- a PDF roof plan or a clear image that can be used as the project source
- one known real-world dimension that can be used to set scale
- enough source detail to identify edges, ridges, and roof sections
The cleaner the source file is, the easier it will be to trace the roof correctly.
Typical first workflow
Most projects follow the same sequence:
- create a new project
- upload a PDF or image
- crop the useful work area
- set the scale
- trace edges and facets
- review project information
- generate the report
Start a new project
Use the new project action in the top toolbar to open the project creation flow.
If another project is already open, confirm that you want to start a new one before continuing.
Upload the source file and define the work area
After selecting a PDF or image, choose only the useful area that should become the editor background.
In most cases this should include:
- the actual plan or roof image you want to trace
- the details needed for tracing
In most cases this should exclude:
- empty page margins
- title blocks
- unrelated drawing content
Set the scale
Once the plan is ready, set the scale before you begin serious geometry work.
Correct scale setup is important because measurements and report values depend on it.
Trace the roof geometry
After scale calibration, continue in the editor:
- draw and adjust roof edges
- review facets
- keep the project organized while tracing
At this stage, the main goal is to build a clean and accurate roof layout from the source plan.
Save and generate the report
When the geometry is ready:
- save the project state
- review project information
- generate the report
You can also reopen an existing project later and continue from the saved state.
Recommendations
- Start with the cleanest available PDF or image.
- Set the scale before spending time on detailed tracing.
- Keep the working area focused on the actual plan or image content you want to trace.
- Review the geometry before generating the final report.
